In the basin
Alamogordo, La Luz, Holloman AFB, Tularosa
Around 4,000 to 4,600 feet, with an average July high of 93°F in Alamogordo. Most homes here heat with natural gas, and half of Alamogordo's houses were built before 1980, many with their original ductwork.
The work down here is mostly air conditioning, heat pumps, furnace replacements, rooftop units on commercial buildings, and replacing tired duct. Spring wind and dust mean outdoor units need cleaning before the first hot week.

In the mountains
Cloudcroft, Mayhill, Ruidoso
Cloudcroft sits at 8,676 feet, with an average January low of 19°F and about sixty-seven inches of snow a year. Across Otero County, nearly one home in four heats with propane or wood.
Up here the work is heating sized for real winters, ductless systems for cabins that were never ducted, and roof trim and gutters made to carry snow and shed it.
